Portuguese wines: a simple guide to choosing at dinner
From the Douro to the Alentejo, from vinho verde to full-bodied reds. What to order with fish, meat and codfish.

Portugal has grape varieties that exist nowhere else. You do not need to be an expert to choose well, just think about what you are going to eat.
With fish and seafood
A vinho verde, fresh and light, or a white from the Douro or Dão. They match codfish, sea bream and prawns without weighing you down.
With meat
For picanha or posta, a red from the Alentejo or Douro, full-bodied, with tannins that stand up to the fat of the meat. If the francesinha is on the table, a young, easy red does the job.
The best rule of wine is the oldest one: drink what you like, with people you like.
